I wanted to ask everyone whether they would like to have a chat feature on the forums? Of course for members only. Let me know what you all think and enough members want it I will code it.

Not a bad idea. I think that there are enough regulars here to make it fun!

I'll throw in my support for the idea also.

I think that would be a very cool thing!

I've never used one before. Not even sure what they are. Are they like sending emails back and forth?

Thank you all for responding! So it sounds like we have some support for it. I have been battling health problems lately but when I get back to full strength I will work on it. I will make a post in the news section when it is ready of course.

It could be a good idea but each topic forum may suffer a tad. And to an extent judging by some of the discussions here we are doing it indirectely. I've learned as well as others just from reading the forums, but if someone has a relationship from previous posts and or simular equipment then it could be useful. As in court, you may need time to side bar, if you will. And with folks just getting into astro-photo the many questions they have and all the answers they get are helpfull, even to those who aren't that far into it yet can get ideas just by reading the forums even tho they haven't joined in the conversation. Thats why I think the regular forums may suffer a tad, bc most are off in the chat side. But you can give it a go and if it works with some tweeks then great, if not, then dry dock that boat. Dano

I run a few non-astro social-type sites (high school alumni) and people have asked for a chat feature. Personally, I think the work to implement it outweighs the benefit. I tell members to exchange IM Id's if they want to chat. Plus, I agree with Dano that reading what other people have said really helps a lot and eliminates some level of repeated questions.

My 2 cents.

P.S. If you or Andy need web development help, just let me know. It's what I do!

My thought is that you need to think a little more to create a post than to chat, I think post(s) are a better byproduct of the technology, more thoughful. As mentioned above someone can always send a PM if needful.

The idea of the chat feature initially was for quick communication mainly to help those who had a problem and needed a quick answer (while observing\imaging). It is completed, but we had the same reservations about making it live as was pointed out it could detract from the forums and the forums are a great resource because the questions, reviews, knowledge, etc. are there for everyone to see. So it was decided for now not to release it.

If any of you have ideas about other enhancements we can make just let me know.

Well, it was a good though, but I also believe that chat would depreciate the reason for "forum" posts. If it were "live" would be one thing also but would also take away from certain things that WOULD have posted that would be helpful to some but would only benefit p2p and but would just throw this whole telescopejunkies.com in the spinner, LOL but that's just my opinion also....... A good idea indeed though there Daniel, how are you anyway? I didn't know you were sick...

My bad, not Andy but Daniel, how are you?

I'm kind of late to this thread but I wanted to add that I think PM would be better for side conversations. I'm afraid chat might cause us to lose some of the value of this forum as others have suggested. I have been reading this forum at least a couple of times a week for a year and a half now. I just started posting a few months back and my post count is still only in double digits but I have learned SO MUCH from just reading what everyone talks about. I'd hate to see some of that information unavailable and unsearchable. My $0.02.
