Best 20 astrobucks I've spent. I also use it to keep subsequent frames aligned. A little trick Eric suggested.

Forum Admin Posts: 1216 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Cedar Park, Texas | Hi Kriegor, The quick answer to your question is: If your camera (of any kind) will put an image on your computer desktop, then StarTarg will appear on your desktop on top of that image. StarTarg's primary use is drift alignment. Instructions for using it as such is included in the program and can be accessed by the great big button labeled thus. Member Junky Posts: 37 ![]() Location: Hardyston NJ | Andy, I just used Star Targ 2.0 last night for the first time. I was a little shaky at first and it took me a while but, I could see the purpose of DA very clearly by actually doing it instead just reading about it. I think I understood your tutorial./ and or cheat notes in the actual program. But, there are a couple of questions I have : 1) Why is the additional movement of the mount in perspective to horizon needed after you get the Azmuth adjustments down? You are instructed to go to 20 degress above the eastern horzon and do the altitude adjustment. 2)Would it matter if you started and finished on the eastern horizon? (as you probably figured out that is what I did). I have read other papers on the net stating that a meridian-close star is all that is needed so why the equator proximity as well? I used the 90 degree to the RA axis trick and I think it worked but can't be sure. Thanks Andy or anyone who has completed DA and can answer. Appreciate it!

Forum Admin Posts: 1216 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Cedar Park, Texas | When you are monitoring a star on or near the meridian and you observe the star moving off of the crosshairs, this ONLY reveals a misalignment in the east-west direction. This is why you move to the star near the eastern horizon, because movement of the star off the crosshair while there will reveal ONLY misalignment in the north-south direction. Accurate alignment requires adjustments in both directions. Those who do only one will certainly be accurate enough for visual astronomy, but for those of us who do astrophotography, you must be as accurate as possible.

Member Junky Posts: 37 ![]() Location: Hardyston NJ | Thanks for the quick reply. I errored in describing posts on the net, I have a bad habit of getting ahead of myself. All the papers do advise the two star procedure. Well, I did it last night in less than ideal conditions and it somewhat worked. Improving my exposure times is the ultimate goal. I think I had the meridian/equitorial star but did not change perspective to the east (or west of what I've been reading.... West is a better direction in my location) I think the correction steps would be reversed in that case correct? Still trying to get the imaginary line concept down to a science. Are there static stars at given latitudes that are good for this procedure? Or, because the procedure is so location specific they are not supplied. The program was really easy to use with PHD, I need a couple of more so so nights to practice with this (another learning curve!!!!) to get it down. Thanks Andy

Extreme Junky Posts: 507 ![]() Location: Sand springs Okla. | Craig, typically the timer is used to insure you weight a sufficeint amount of time to see any drift. Many people use 300 sec (5MIN) as a standard. Some do prefer longer.

Forum Admin Posts: 1216 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Cedar Park, Texas | Set it (in seconds) for however long you wish and when it's done it'll ding. It's just a reminder for you to know when you've been drift aligning long enough. You can use it to time eggs if you want to.
