We've really been slacking here and I'm as guilty as any of our other imagers. Anyway, let's give NGC6888, the Crescent Nebula a try. It's a good one for OSC, LRGB and Narrowband and good for all of the image scales. And as an additional challenge for those that can get some fairly long exposures, see if you can pick up the Soap Bubble Nebula. Good luck!

Does Cut and Paste count as catching the soap bubble? I can make some nice ones in the sink or tub.

My main goal in this was the soap bubble. This picture was taken on 6-29-11 and as you might be able to tell, I was fighting some clouds. This picture is a stack of 7 exposures, 10 minutes each. Wish I could have had better skies and more exposures but after that, the clouds won. Now I did a lot of processing in just that area trying to bring it out and I believe I caught it. It is hard to see, thats why I focused the processing on just that area. You really can't see a lot of the bubble but you can make out the ring. I drew a circle around the area so you don't have to spend the time that was spent on looking for it. The Crescent is in frame but is there mostly because it was part of the challenge and it and the stars above it were used as reference marks for finding the soap bubble.

Please judge for yourself, is it really there?

I believe so, but not by much.

Sam

Oh when I say I used the stars abouve the Crescent to find it, this is what I ment and did. If you draw a line thought the 4 stars above the Crescent, and keep going thought the next 6 it will take you right to it.

It's there, but you're right. That's one that requires a lof of exposure time. I just can't catch a break with the clouds. Summer is just not the best time to be imaging here in the Gulf south.

No soap bubble at this fl but here is my Cresent shot.

Celestron 10" Newt / SBIG 8300M /
480 sec Luminence x 14 / 5 x 480 sec darks /
120 sec RGB x 17 Binned 2x2/ 6 x 120 sec darks
Acquired and Stacked in CCD SOFT Processed in Photoshop CS

I lost a bit of the exposures. But was satisfied with the end result.

Very nice, Tim! At 120 seconds/sub that 10" must really be collecting the photons to make this target look that good!

Thanks everyone, Barry the luminance shot's were 480 sec. Just the Red, Green, and Blue, were 120 sec. They were also binned at 2x2. Even at that this is just over 3.5 hrs exposure. I lost 5 x 480 sec shot's.

Thanks Joe, ya know I really miss these challenges here. I learned massive amounts from seeing what other people would do on a given object.
I can't fairly compete in them any longer because my OTA and and mount exceed the 3500 dollar limit. Once I replaced my primary it went over.

I really feel your pain Tim, That $3,500 dollar imaging setup must be a real drag how do you live with yourself, or sleep at night?

Awesome Pics you have taken though!!!
