So I have a really old (i.e. circa 86) Meade LX Quartz 8" SN scope with the fork style equatorial mount. I've been wanting to get into astronomy again, but I never really liked the fork mount. On top of that I'm looking at wanting to use computer controlled (especially either via laptop and/or tablet) mounts. So I've searched high and low for advice on removing the tube from the mount. Meade predictably was no help, and haven't seen any real guides via google. One mention did come from someone via eBay who mentioned that even if removed from the forks there was still a weight in the rear casing you'd have to deal with.

Anyone have thoughts they'd care to share?
Thanks

I have a friend who takes them apart all the time and says it is easy. Since he is a retired Major with a degree in engineering probably not that easy. Seems like you could find that on the internet or YouTube!

Hello and WELCOME!!
Many folks have de-forked their scope. The main issue I have heard is you will want to loosen one of the fork arms from the base.
This is to give a bit of clearance so that you don't scratch up your tube.

Ah thanks for the info and the link! In my searching I hadn't come up with that particular post, so I'll definitively give it a read!
