The Beast is back! I reassembled my 6" refractor on the movable platform. With an astronomy class looming on the horizon I need to get it ready for use. Since I went into astrophotography shortly after I first got it the visual properties have not been properly tested. In other words I spent most of my time with it, eyes glued to a monitor instead of an eyepiece! It is amazing how big it is especially with the tripod extension! Will post some pictures later!

Here is a picture I took this evening. Not the best but you can see the homemade weight! I used a collar I bought at the hardware store, replaced the set screw with a bolt and stuck it on. works well. The only problem with the scope is that the wooden mount is too light and the scope jiggles way to much. Yes I can take it off but it is handy to just roll out of the garage and live with the jiggles!

For the first time in 32 years of marriage I impressed my wife with a telescope view. She looked at Saturn under 300x and said, "Wow, it is so clear! It looks like a picture in a magazine!" I believe that says a lot about the quality of the optics! I am still jet lagged so did not stay out a long time tonight but it is a harbinger of things to come! The GSO focuser needs an extension tube but works very well otherwise. So I just adjusted the eyepiece and diagonal until I could get it focused. I was too lazy to go out to the dome and get my extension! By the way I split the double double in Lyra quite easily with 300 power!

Right now I am using a Skyview Pro with dual drives on an Orion tripod extension. For visual it works well and it will do some short exposure imaging with a variety of cameras. I will be using a Meade DSI Pro with thsi scope in the futre, mainly for planetary work. Since I already have an 8" F/4 astrograph and ST-7 and my friend Tom is halfway through a rebuild of the 8" LX-200 with an ST-402 I am planning on using the 6" mainly for Visual.

The cool part of this was that a guy in Kansas City sold me the telescope and mount for 350 dollars! I bought a GSO focuser for 150 (after Andy sold me an excellent focuser that was great for visual but not so good with an ST-7!) a Dual drive for 200+ and a tripod extension for 90. Over all this thing has cost me around 800. Definitely a great deal, way under the used market value. I am thinking about taking a couple of days off in September to go fishing in the mountains and maybe taking "The Beast." Snow lake is one of the darkest sites left in the Southwest and would be an awesome place for the 6"! I was there several years ago with my 8" dob and it was amazing...magnitude 7+ skies with no light domes. Right now though the area is closed due to fires and fire danger. Hopefully we will have gotten some rain by this fall and everything will reopen.
