While looking at camera's I found this. http://www.telescope.com/Astrophotography/Astrophotography-Cameras/...

Has anyone seen anything other then the samples done with this camea? I see that its a OSC and Im kind of looking for mono in the 8300 chip but this caught my eye.

Along with this, does anyone have any suggestions about a nice mono CCD with the 8300 chip or when it comes down to it, are most of them the same really now when they are the same chip. I know some say read noise but is it really that different from one camera to the other with the same chip? Cooling I read 20 degrees is about all that you will notice. After 20 degrees you really won't notice a difference. I would think it would make a difference seeing if your out on a night when its 80 degrees out, cooling the chip to 40 is a lot different then 60.

Thanks,
Sam

Samantha,
I can't say anything about that particular Orion camera, but I did own the Parsec 8300m for a very short time. I had to send it back after many issues that Orion just could not resolve. At the time i owned mine there was another person on this forum who was having an issue with theirs.
I have since moved on the SBIG STF8300 and could not be happier. SBIG has a lot going for them, particularly the customer service and for me one of the biggies was lots of matched accessories for my camera.
The 8300 chip has many pluses, decent size, small pixels, lots of options with binning, good sensitivity, and most important to me was reasonable price. Atik and QSI also have a good offering with that chip.
Clear skies,
Quentin

I was the other person on the forum with the Parsec issues. I would definitely look at some of the other vendors out there. I agree with Quentin, SBIG is a great choice. The STF8300 was at the top of my list until the new Sony 694 chip came out. So now I am going to try the the Atik 460EX Mono. I have been waiting for a larger version of the 285 chip to come out. So this is my dream CCD. But there are a lot of other great options.

Also, since you are looking at a one shot color CCD, in that price range I would recommend the QHY8Pro. I had an SBIG 8300 color and the QHYYPro completely blew it away in sensitivity. For mono, the 8300 chip is great, but for color, there are better options. Ever the Orion SSPro is better, and less expensive. Here are a couple of shots I took with the SSPro: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ajtedesco/6090457699/in/photostream and http://www.flickr.com/photos/ajtedesco/5901191417/in/photostream And that is with a less sensitive chip than the one that is in the QHY8Pro. If you want to spend more, the SXVR-M25C or M26C are some of the best OSC CCD's available.

I've read the same thing; the 8300 chip is great for a mono camera but has been less than stellar for OSC. I agree with AJ...the QHY8 Pro is a good choice. It has regulated cooling where as the original QHY8 didn't. As most of you know, I have an SBIG ST4000XCM I'm waiting to get back. It's another camera you might consider. I've seen some terrific images taken with this camera.

Thanks guys. Right now, after seeing what everyone has been doing with mono camera's I believe that is the way to go seeing my setup is more then likely going to be a permanent or close to it setup.

One thing that is on my mind about mono camera's is flats. I have read that you have to take flats and refocus for each filter. I can see this being the case with a lens setup as if you go from shooting red to blue your focus might be off just a touch even with the best apo. Right now I'm looking at the Astro-tech 10" RC in carbon fiber. I was thinking about the edge line so I could have wide field and smaller field in one scope but the cool down and image / focus shift makes me want a fixed mirror setup. So with a mirror setup, is the focus between filters and flats for every filter still needed or is that more of a refract or thing?

Sam

Oh forgot. The camera that I linked isn't an 8300 based camera. It has a Kodak KAI-10100-CXC chip in it.

Samantha,
I went to a mono camera and have never looked back and could not be happier. The light pollution in my area is only getting worse and if it wasnt for a mono camera and narrowband filters it would be a very frustrating hobby. The attached image with a SV102ed F7 is only three 300 second exposures, binned, with the STF 8300. This was also with a fairly bright moon in the sky. Skies have been terrible here in south Louisiana but did get a little hole in the sky a few nights ago for a few minutes.
Good luck with your decision!
Quentin

Thanks for the look. I have an SV102ed as well. Its good to see what it can do with the 8300 camera. For me a mono camera makes sense if I don't have to break it down every night. I think I read it here that with a mono camera doing narrowband isn't effected by moon light. Is that true?
