Hi all,

happy to be part of your group as there are no dedicated forums in my country and also not many people who are keen to take this as hobby.

well i have bought a reflector scope for myself after few years of waiting.
the specs are
dia 76 mm
focal length 900 mm
eyepieces 20mm, 12.5mm, 4mm
barlow 3x
finderscope 6*25
magnifications (max) 675 (as they say)

well this is my first scope and i think i have bought a good one. ( do tell if this is good scope or not)
the thing is that i am new to astronomy and have no clue as from where to start. and also i have not been able to focus it till now.

and also want to inquire that once i get it focused, will i be able to see saturn and its rings.
i tried focusing last night but when used 20 mm lens there was not much problem.
problem started only when i used barlow or 4 mm lens.

regards.

Welcome to Andy's! Well, the focus problem is probably due to the aperture vs magnification. Typically, good optics can support about 50X the aperture size. Your scope is around three inches, so you multiply 3X50 for a max of 150X keeping in mind that it's under pretty good seeing conditions; stable atmosphere and fairly high up from the horizon that 50X will work. There will be days that you may get 35 or 40X at maximum.

To arrive at the magnification number you take you focal length, 900mm and divide by your eyepieces focal length. The 20mm ep gives you 45X. The 4 mm gives you 225X which is well over the maximum magnification. Unfortunately, many manufacturers deceive prospective buyers into what a telescope will do. Heck, I had a Celestron C14 that in theory could handle 700X. On a typical night of seeing, 350X was about it. I could push it well over 400X on a very stable night, but those nights were pretty rare.

At any rate your 12.5mm ep should give you pretty good views of Saturn.

David

Actually full Moon is the least desirable phase at which to observe the Moon. The full illumination by the Sun lowers contrast, washing out detail and relief. Relief and detail are brought out along the line of shadow and light, the Terminator. Changing by the hour, every night and with each lunation it presents an endless variety of interesting features. One of my most favorite observing activities is to "Prowl the Terminator." Panning back and forth along the terminator, first at one magnification, then another, all the while identifying features with "Sky & Telescope's Field Map of the Moon" at my kneee.

hey had my first view of Jupiter today ( i think it was Jupiter, used the i phone apps to know what i was watching)
the view was good and clear.
used my 20mm lens but when used Barlow with the same lens was not able to focus . without Barlow it was just a bigger point of light but a beautiful one.
enjoyed it.
